Reid, Thomas and Burton secure European boxing medals for Great Britain

Great Britain secured at least three medals at the European Boxing Championships in Bulgaria on Tuesday as Chantelle Reid, Damar Thomas and Abdul Burton advanced to the semi-finals. BBC Sport reported that the trio won their quarter-finals in Sofia, giving Britain medal-winning results in three contests on a day when Ruby White, Emily Asquith and Isaac Okoh were eliminated.

Reid defeated Ireland's Evelyn Igharo 5-0 in the women's light-middleweight division at the Asics Arena Sports Hall. The 28-year-old, who won a silver medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, will face Serbia's Milena Matovic in Wednesday's semi-final. Her victory guarantees another medal following that Commonwealth result, although her final placing in Bulgaria remains to be decided.

Thomas also progressed with a 5-0 victory, beating Georgia's Nikoloz Begadze in their men's super-heavyweight quarter-final. The 21-year-old's next opponent will be Mahammad Abdullayev of Azerbaijan. Reid and Thomas both advanced by the same score, while Burton came through a closer contest against a boxer competing in his home country to join them in the last four.

Burton, 20, edged Bulgaria's Javier Ibanez 3-2, overcoming an opponent who has won an Olympic bronze medal. The result earned him a semi-final meeting with Turkey's Semih Gumus. Speaking after his victory, Burton said he had needed to respond when the contest went against him and emphasised his determination to succeed, according to the BBC's account.

There were defeats elsewhere for the British squad. White lost her flyweight bout 3-2 to Turkey's Hatice Akbas, an Olympic silver medallist. Asquith was beaten 5-0 by Ireland's Lisa O'Rourke in the women's light-heavyweight division. In the men's heavyweight competition, Commonwealth Games champion Okoh went out after a 3-0 defeat against Germany's Kevin Lebowski, ending his bid for a medal at these championships.

More than half of Britain's 15-strong squad have now been eliminated, the BBC reported, but further quarter-final opportunities remain. Lauren Mackie, Amy Broadhurst, Callum Makin and Oladimeji Shittu are scheduled to compete on Wednesday. They will be seeking to add to the three medals already guaranteed by Reid, Thomas and Burton, whose own campaigns continue in the semi-finals.
