Duckett Sacrifices £200,000 IPL Deal for England Test Future

In a bold career move that prioritizes international cricket over financial gain, England opener Ben Duckett has withdrawn from the Indian Premier League, sacrificing a £200,000 contract with Delhi Capitals to concentrate on his Test future.

The decision comes at a significant personal cost. Under IPL regulations, players who withdraw from signed contracts for non-injury reasons face a three-year ban from the tournament. "It was a very difficult decision, and I want to apologise to everyone at Delhi that I won't be coming," Duckett explained. "I've spent a lot of time away from home in different places, and it felt like the best thing for me to do to be ready to play for England is to be here right now, at home, refreshing my mind and body."

The 29-year-old's choice follows a disappointing Ashes series where England suffered a crushing 4-1 defeat to Australia. Duckett managed just 188 runs across five Tests, with a highest score of only 42. His struggles against Mitchell Starc's left-arm pace became a particular concern, exposing technical vulnerabilities that need addressing.

"More importantly, play some four-day cricket for Notts, and try to find that form I had last summer. My journey into the Test team has come from county cricket," Duckett added, emphasizing his belief that domestic competition remains the foundation for international success.

The Nottinghamshire batsman isn't the first England player to make this sacrifice. Harry Brook similarly abandoned his Delhi contract in 2025 to prioritize his England career, setting a precedent for choosing country over cash.

A video of him intoxicated during the team's mid-tour break in Noosa surfaced on social media before the Boxing Day Test, adding pressure to his already precarious position. "I am sorry for that incident, it was not professional and shouldn't have happened. There is no hiding away from it," he acknowledged.

Despite recent struggles, Duckett's overall record since returning to Test cricket in 2022 remains impressive. He averages 42 with six centuries, demonstrating the talent that earned him England recognition. However, with the team under pressure to refresh following the Ashes disappointment, both Duckett and opening partner Zak Crawley face uncertain futures.

England team director Rob Key has indicated a desire to reconnect with first-class counties on selection matters, scheduling meetings with cricket directors this week. This shift could benefit players like Duckett who prioritize county cricket development.
