Seren Lockwood ruled out of Wales-USA Test after failed head injury assessment

Wales scrum-half Seren Lockwood has been ruled out of Saturday's WXV Global Series match against the United States after failing a head injury assessment. BBC Sport Wales reported that Lockwood is following World Rugby's return-to-play protocols after leaving the field during the first half of Wales' victory over South Africa.

Head coach Sean Lynn confirmed that she would not be available for the second fixture of the series, at Cardiff Arms Park on 26 September. He said Wales were looking after Lockwood and welcomed the protection provided by the assessment process. The report did not give a date for her return to action.

Lockwood's absence affects a reshaped Wales backline in which she had partnered Keira Bevan at half-back. According to BBC Sport Wales, the change opens the way for Lleucu George to come back at fly-half, with Bevan moving to her customary scrum-half position. Lynn expressed enthusiasm about the combination available to him despite losing Lockwood after the eight-try win over South Africa.

There was more encouraging news elsewhere in the backs, with Carys Cox fit again following knee surgery during the summer. Cox can play at centre or on the wing, giving Lynn options in more than one position. The coach praised her rehabilitation and said she felt stronger, quicker and fitter following the work she had done to recover.

Lynn also highlighted Cox's confidence and athletic ability, pointing to her capacity to get past an initial defender. He said the way Wales are now playing should provide opportunities for her to carry the ball. Her return offers another option for the backline while Lockwood is unavailable, although the report did not confirm a starting role for Cox.

Fellow back Nel Metcalfe remains unavailable for the United States match. Lynn said she was progressing well in rehabilitation and had taken part in some rugby-related activity, but he was still hoping to see her return during next month's two-Test tour of Japan. That remains a potential comeback rather than a confirmed appearance.
