Emma Sing Embraces Challenge for England Full-Back Role as Six Nations Approaches
The Gloucester-Hartpury star believes her unique attributes complement rather than compete with Ellie Kildunne as she pushes for a starting spot.

As the Women's Six Nations kicks off this Saturday, England faces an enviable dilemma at the full-back position. Emma Sing, the Gloucester-Hartpury powerhouse, is mounting a compelling case for the number 15 jersey traditionally worn by World Cup sensation Ellie Kildunne.

The 25-year-old Sing brings an impressive resumé to the discussion, boasting World Cup winner status, multiple Six Nations grand slam victories, and three Premiership Women's Rugby trophies. Despite this decorated background, the former veterinary science student from Devon maintains a refreshingly humble perspective on her competition with the Red Roses' breakout star.

"I do find it really hard sometimes when you look at the media and they are trying to put us against each other," Sing explains with characteristic directness. "I understand for club, we are against each other in that sense, but as soon as we go into camp we are trying to make each other better."

This collaborative mindset reflects Sing's mature approach to what could easily become a contentious battle for England's most high-profile position. Where some might see rivalry, she recognizes opportunity for mutual growth and team improvement.

The contrast in playing styles between the two full-backs is striking yet complementary. Kildunne, who finished second in BBC Sports Personality of the Year following her electric 2025 World Cup performances, brings devastating pace and agility that terrorizes defensive lines. Sing offers a different proposition entirely.

"If you look at Ellie, she is crazy fast, crazy step, really agile, lots of flair," Sing acknowledges. "I am a lot more physical than her because I think I am 10-plus kilos heavier than her. That separates us in a completely different style of rugby because I am not as fast as her, probably can't step as well as her, but I do have goal-kicking that she doesn't necessarily have."

That goal-kicking ability has proven invaluable for Gloucester-Hartpury, where Sing has emerged as the Premiership Women's Rugby's most reliable points-scorer over the past two campaigns. Her accuracy from the tee, combined with what she describes as her "farm strength" developed during her rural Devon upbringing, creates a unique skill set perfectly suited to modern rugby demands.

Recent form suggests Sing's case for inclusion grows stronger by the week. Despite missing several matches with a knee injury, she remains the league's second-highest points-scorer this season, trailing only Zoe Harrison while collecting four player-of-the-match awards along the way.

Head coach John Mitchell acknowledges the healthy competition while hinting at potential positional flexibility. "Ellie is going to be competing with Emma," Mitchell confirmed. "We would also like to see how Emma Sing goes in the midfield as well over the next few years. It will be important for her to develop another position because she is a very strong carrier on the ball."

This tactical evolution could prove crucial, particularly with regular starter Tatyana Heard sidelined for the tournament with a foot injury. Sing's physicality and goal-kicking ability make her an intriguing option at inside or outside center, potentially allowing both she and Kildunne to feature in Mitchell's starting lineup.

Former England captain Katy Daley-McLean believes the competition will elevate both players. "Sing is more of your traditional full-back. She kicks well. She defends well," Daley-McLean observed. "Ellie has so much X factor, but I think Sing has seen an opportunity here and she's after Ellie's shirt."

For Sing, the motivation extends beyond personal achievement. Her journey from veterinary aspirations to World Cup glory exemplifies the dedication required at international level, and she approaches this competition as another step in that ongoing evolution.
