England's Emma Sing Ready to Challenge Kildunne for Six Nations Starting Role
World Cup winner Emma Sing believes her farm strength and goal-kicking ability set her apart as she competes for England's full-back position.

Emma Sing refuses to view her battle with Ellie Kildunne for England's full-back position as a rivalry, despite both players targeting the same coveted No. 15 jersey ahead of the Women's Six Nations championship beginning this Saturday.

The 25-year-old Gloucester-Hartpury star brings impressive credentials to the competition, including a Rugby World Cup winners medal, multiple Six Nations grand slam titles, and three Premiership Women's Rugby trophies. Yet Sing remains characteristically modest about her achievements, preferring to let her consistent club performances speak for themselves.

Kildunne has become synonymous with the England full-back role, emerging as the face of the Red Roses after her electrifying performances at the 2025 World Cup. The Harlequins player's dynamic displays even earned her second place in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards, cementing her status as one of rugby's brightest stars.

However, Sing believes their contrasting styles make direct comparisons meaningless. She acknowledges Kildunne's exceptional pace, agility, and flair while highlighting her own unique attributes that could benefit England's tactical approach.

"I find it really hard sometimes when you look at the media and they are trying to put us against each other," Sing explained. "As soon as we go into camp we are trying to make each other better. We have different attributes so we are almost incomparable in that aspect."

The Gloucester star's "farm strength" has become legendary within rugby circles, a product of her upbringing on a Devon farm before pursuing bio-veterinary science at Hartpury University. This physical advantage, combined with being approximately 10 kilograms heavier than Kildunne, provides England with a different tactical option at full-back.

Perhaps most significantly, Sing possesses goal-kicking ability that Kildunne lacks. This skill has proven invaluable at club level, where Sing has topped the Premiership Women's Rugby points-scoring charts in the past two campaigns through accurate place-kicking. Even this season, despite missing games with a knee injury, she remains the league's second-highest points-scorer behind only Zoe Harrison.

Head coach John Mitchell has acknowledged the healthy competition between the two players while hinting at potential positional flexibility for Sing. The England boss has expressed interest in developing Sing's midfield capabilities, possibly at inside or outside center.

"We would like to see how Emma Sing goes in the midfield as well over the next few years," Mitchell revealed. "She is a very strong carrier on the ball and her outside break, she has a very good fend."

This versatility could prove crucial following Tatyana Heard's tournament-ending foot injury, which has left a gap in England's midfield alongside new captain Meg Jones.

Former England captain Katy Daley-McLean believes Sing represents a genuine threat to Kildunne's position, praising the Gloucester player's traditional full-back qualities. "Sing is more of your traditional full-back. She kicks well. She defends well," Daley-McLean observed.

Sing has earned 13 England caps since her 2022 debut, including three appearances at the 2025 World Cup triumph. Her recent return from knee injury, highlighted by Gloucester's crucial 22-17 victory over Saracens in March, demonstrates her readiness for international competition.

Whether Mitchell opts for Kildunne's X-factor or Sing's traditional skill set, England possesses enviable depth at full-back. For Sing, any opportunity represents a chance to step from Kildunne's shadow and prove that, as she insists, they truly are incomparable.
