Roma threatened early, with Thibaut Courtois saving a Mario Hermoso effort before Marten de Roon opened the scoring. Kylian Mbappé answered with a shot from outside the penalty area that took a deflection, and the teams went into half-time at 1-1. The equaliser did not prevent Roma from continuing to create problems for the visitors, according to Fox Sports Mexico's account.
Donyell Malen then scored twice, six minutes apart, early in the second half. Mbappé subsequently had an effort ruled out for offside, leaving Madrid still needing two goals just to draw level. The three goals that eventually reversed the result all came from corner sequences, with Rüdiger delivering the winner after Espí and Endrick had erased Roma's advantage.
Brazilian outlet ge reported that Endrick was named UEFA's player of the match after entering with Madrid trailing 3-1. His aerial contribution helped change the result: a header forced a save from Roma goalkeeper Gollini, and Espí converted the rebound. Endrick then scored with another header to make it 3-3, before Rüdiger supplied the decisive finish from an Arda Güler corner.
The performance came despite very limited playing time earlier in the season. According to ge, this was only Endrick's second appearance for Madrid in the campaign; before Wednesday, he had played four minutes and had not recorded a goal involvement. In comments to TNT Sports Brasil reported by ge, he thanked José Mourinho and said the coach had instructed him to enjoy himself while carrying out his marking responsibilities.
Endrick also stopped short of committing his future to Madrid when asked after the match. Ge reported that he left both staying and leaving open, while saying his responsibility during his time at the club was to work for Real Madrid.
