ESPN brings all eight NWSL finales together in first Decision Day simulcast
Watch Highlights
ESPN carried every NWSL regular-season finale for the first time, pairing eight simultaneous matches with a new studio show. The broadcast covered Gotham’s first Shield and the final playoff places.

ESPN carried all eight NWSL regular-season finales on the same network's platforms for the first time on Sunday, introducing a studio programme that followed the changing playoff picture across the league. According to reporting by The Guardian, the 16-team slate was the largest set of simultaneous kickoffs in NWSL history.

Former Gotham captain Ali Krieger and host Kelsey Riggs Cuff led the coverage from ESPN's headquarters in Bristol. The planned distribution put Gotham's home match against Utah on ESPN, the other seven games on ESPN+ and the studio programme on ESPN2. ESPN had previously used a similar format for Bundesliga and US Open Cup coverage, but this was its first such NWSL production.

The operation involved more than 60 cameras, over 150 staff around the United States and about 20 more in Bristol. Krieger and Cuff prepared with researchers, reviewed games and compiled 12 pages of notes. The league's own modelling illustrated the complexity: 50,000 simulations produced more than 200 potential playoff brackets, with 6,561 possible combinations of results across the day's matches.

The launch did not go entirely to plan. A five-set Tennessee-Missouri college volleyball match pushed the opening of Gotham's game onto ESPN2, delaying the studio programme until about 25 minutes into the soccer action. Later, coverage switched away from Portland while Sophia Wilson was approaching a penalty kick. The Guardian also reported that some viewers complained online about audio synchronisation in individual match feeds.

Alongside live action and updates on the standings, the programme included guests such as Megan Rapinoe and Olivia Moultrie. Its Seattle coverage captured the Reign's go-ahead goal and, 14 minutes later, Jess Fishlock leaving the field in her final regular-season appearance. The combination brought individual milestones into a broadcast also tracking the Shield race, home advantage and qualification for the playoffs.

Gotham ultimately secured their first Shield, while Kansas City and Washington confirmed home quarter-finals. Seattle clinched the final playoff place and Utah reached the postseason for the first time in club history. The broadcast closed with Gotham lifting the trophy at Sports Illustrated Stadium, after which ESPN's crew turned to preparations for the playoffs beginning Friday.
