Amateur Ethan Fang Steals First Round Headlines at 2026 Masters
20-year-old first-timer shoots 74 to lead all amateurs after Thursday opening round at Augusta National.

Twenty-year-old Ethan Fang made his Augusta National debut one to remember, carding a solid 2-over-par 74 to claim the amateur lead after Thursday's opening round of the 2026 Masters Tournament.

Fang, competing in his first Major championship, displayed remarkable composure on golf's most intimidating stage. Despite admitting to pre-round nerves as he walked from the putting green to the first tee, the amateur managed to find his rhythm on the storied Georgia course.

The young golfer credited his driving accuracy as the foundation of his strong showing. "I think I hit it really good off the tee," Fang explained after his round. "I think that's a big part of this golf course is driving it well and then hitting greens out there. That's probably the biggest thing that helped me keep it in contention."

Fang's scorecard featured a balanced mix of highlights and struggles typical of a Masters rookie. He managed to collect birdies on the par-4 third hole and the challenging par-4 ninth, showcasing flashes of the talent that earned him his invitation to Augusta. However, bogeys on holes 5, 7, 14, and 16 reminded everyone of the unforgiving nature of this legendary layout.

The warm, dry conditions on Thursday made scoring particularly challenging across the field, making Fang's performance all the more impressive. His 74 left him in contention among the professional field while establishing a comfortable margin over his fellow amateurs.

The amateur field of six players showed the typical wide spread of first-round struggles at Augusta. Jackson Herrington finished two shots behind Fang at 4-over-par, while Mason Howell posted a 5-over 77. Fifa Laopakdee faced a more difficult day, signing for an 8-over 80, while both Brandon Holtz and Mateo Pulcini struggled to matching 9-over 81s.

For Fang, the opening round represents validation of his decision to accept the Masters invitation and test himself against golf's elite. His position just inside the top 40 puts him in excellent position to make the cut and continue his Augusta journey through the weekend.

The performance also highlights the depth of amateur golf in 2026, with young players increasingly willing to challenge themselves in professional events. Fang's confident approach to course management and his ability to bounce back from early mistakes suggest he possesses the mental fortitude required to succeed at this level.

As Friday's second round approaches, Fang will look to build on his solid foundation while managing the inevitable increase in pressure. His driving accuracy will again be crucial on a course that punishes wayward tee shots mercilessly.

The amateur leaderboard battle adds an intriguing subplot to the 2026 Masters, with Fang's early success setting up what could be a compelling weekend chase among the non-professional competitors.
