The match had remained close from the first innings, when Sussex made 156 and Warwickshire replied with 161. Resuming their second innings on 84-3, Sussex built their total around Tom Haines, who scored 67. Ethan Bamber took 3-42, while Woakes removed James Coles and later trapped Jaydev Unadkat lbw to end the innings.
Sussex made an immediate impact with the ball. Sean Hunt bowled Rob Yates, Jaydev Unadkat had Zen Malik caught behind and Henry Crocombe dismissed Will Young lbw. Warwickshire recovered through Vansh Jani and Dan Mousley, whose fourth-wicket partnership added 107 runs in 24 overs. Jani made 62, his first first-class half-century, and Mousley scored 58.
Hunt then shifted the match again by taking three wickets in 11 deliveries. Mousley was caught at mid-off, Ed Barnard edged behind and Jani was caught at second slip. Alex Davies also fell to Crocombe, leaving Warwickshire’s final three wickets needing another 47 runs in fading light.
Woakes and Michael Booth added 23 before Booth played on to Hunt, giving the Sussex bowler figures of 5-65 and nine wickets in the match. Woakes then put on another 23 with Bamber, but Bamber edged Crocombe to the wicketkeeper with the scores level. Ollie Hannon-Dalby joined Woakes, and the pair negotiated 13 scoreless balls before Woakes edged Unadkat for four to finish unbeaten on 23.
The result gave Warwickshire 19 points and Sussex three, keeping the Bears involved in the Division One title contest. Warwickshire are due to host reigning champions Nottinghamshire at Edgbaston next week, while Sussex’s next reported assignment is against Somerset at Hove. Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace praised his team’s effort but identified costly runs conceded late in Warwickshire’s first innings as one of the match’s decisive periods.
