Wallabies call up Teddy Wilson and Tom Lambert for November tour
Australia coach Les Kiss named uncapped scrumhalf Teddy Wilson and loosehead prop Tom Lambert in a 33-player squad on Friday for November's Nations Championship Tests. Reuters reported that the pair were selected for the matches against England, Scotland and Wales, following Australia's consecutive defeats by New Zealand in the Bledisloe Cup.
Wilson, 23, joins Ryan Lonergan and Tate McDermott among the squad's scrumhalves. AFP reported that his father, David Wilson, made 79 appearances for Australia, including nine as captain, and helped win the 1999 World Cup. The younger Wilson's first senior national squad selection comes with Australia preparing to host next year's World Cup.
Lambert earned his opportunity after a strong season with the New South Wales Waratahs, according to Reuters. His inclusion accompanies several changes from the group involved against New Zealand. Aidan Ross, Nick Champion de Crespigny, Toby Macpherson and Zane Nonggor are among the forwards omitted, while Harry McLaughlin-Phillips, Jordan Petaia and Kalani Thomas also miss out.
The squad brings back Taniela Tupou and Tom Hooper from their European clubs. AFP reported that both contributed from the bench when Australia beat South Africa in Perth last month. Neither was available for the subsequent New Zealand Tests because those fixtures were outside World Rugby's international player-release window.
Carter Gordon has also been recalled, although Reuters reported that the flyhalf was still recovering from the broken leg he suffered against Argentina. Selection therefore does not establish that his recovery is complete. Will Skelton, Charlie Cale and Jake Gordon are among the players unavailable through injury, according to the same report.
AFP also reported the return of centre Hunter Paisami following a suspension for a high tackle. The European trip comprises four Tests, with a further opponent still to be determined for the Nations Championship finals weekend after the meetings with England, Scotland and Wales.
Kiss said the selection decisions were intended to develop depth, according to AFP. He described the tour as an opportunity to try combinations and improve connections within the team, while acknowledging the demands of four matches against strong opposition.
