Forest Green confirm Peterborough offer for Robbie Savage as exit talks begin

Forest Green Rovers have confirmed that Robbie Savage has been offered the manager's position at Peterborough United, with negotiations taking place over the terms of his departure. BBC Sport reported that chairman Dale Vince disclosed the offer in a statement on Tuesday, moving the situation beyond the permission to hold talks announced a day earlier.

Vince said Savage had wanted to leave for personal reasons, which the club understood and respected. He confirmed that Forest Green had authorised discussions with Peterborough and wished the manager well. The statement described an offer and continuing negotiations between the clubs, rather than a completed appointment, leaving the terms of Savage's exit still to be resolved.

Peterborough have been looking for a replacement for Luke Williams since dismissing him on 19 September. Their search follows a difficult opening to the League One season: they stand 23rd after winning only once in their first eight league matches, according to the BBC. Savage would therefore be taking over a side near the bottom of the division if the move is completed.

The 51-year-old joined Forest Green in July 2025 after managing Macclesfield. His first season ended with Rovers seventh in the National League and a defeat in the play-off eliminators. This season, Forest Green are 12th after 10 matches, having recorded four victories, two draws and four defeats.

Savage will not be in the dugout for Tuesday's home fixture against Wealdstone. The Stroud Times reported that goalkeeping coach Jonathan Gould confirmed the absence at a press conference and said he would work alongside Yan Klukowski and Josh Bowen to oversee the team. Gould said the players had been told on Monday morning.

Gould acknowledged that some players would be disappointed but stressed their responsibility to perform for the club. He said the coaching group would draw on its shared work through pre-season and bring its different strengths together. For Forest Green, those arrangements allow the remaining staff to take charge of the next match while discussions over Savage's future continue.
