Gareth Anscombe’s Scarlets Debut Delayed by Registration Issue

Gareth Anscombe’s first appearance for Scarlets has been delayed by a registration problem, with the club now hoping the fly-half will be cleared to face Dragons on September 11. BBC Sport reported that Anscombe had been selected to start a pre-season match against Exeter Chiefs at Sandy Park before being withdrawn shortly before kick-off.

Scarlets confirmed that the 35-year-old was not injured and said his absence was connected to his registration. The club expects the paperwork to be resolved quickly but has not assigned blame for the issue. If clearance arrives in time, Anscombe is set to play against Dragons at Parc y Scarlets.

Although he could not take part against Exeter, Anscombe travelled to Sandy Park and assisted during the team’s warm-up. He then watched as Scarlets recorded a 36-15 victory. According to the club, he has trained throughout pre-season and is fit and ready to play once the administrative matter is settled.

The former Wales international returned to Welsh rugby this summer after spending last season with French Top 14 side Bayonne. Anscombe previously played for Cardiff and Ospreys and won 42 caps for Wales. His move gives Scarlets another experienced option at fly-half alongside current Wales number 10 Sam Costelow.

That additional depth addresses a position where Scarlets encountered difficulties when Costelow was unavailable through injury. Anscombe’s experience across domestic and international rugby provides competition for the role, but his first opportunity in club colours now depends on the completion of the outstanding registration process rather than his physical condition.

The Dragons match is one of two remaining pre-season fixtures for the Llanelli-based region. Scarlets are also scheduled to play Saracens the following Friday before beginning their United Rugby Championship campaign. Their league season is due to start at Parc y Scarlets on September 26, when Cardiff will be the visitors. For now, the club’s immediate focus is securing Anscombe’s eligibility for the Dragons fixture.
