Gauff Recovers from Vomiting on Court to Beat Cirstea in Feisty Madrid Open Clash
Coco Gauff displayed remarkable fighting spirit to overcome both illness and a determined Sorana Cirstea in a rollercoaster Madrid Open second-round match, prevailing 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in two hours and 41 minutes at the Caja Magica.
The American world number three suffered what appeared to be a stomach virus during the second set, visibly retching behind the baseline before vomiting on court during a changeover. Despite looking extremely weakened, Gauff composed herself and returned to secure the decisive break in the third set.
"I really wasn't feeling well at all out there – I thought I might have to stop," Gauff admitted in her on-court interview. "Sorana is such a tough competitor and I knew if I could just keep fighting she might eventually get tight."
The match was bristling with controversy, particularly in the opening set where Gauff survived four break points before converting her fifth set point after an epic 20-minute game. Cirstea grew increasingly frustrated with chair umpire Kader Nouni, earning a code violation for smashing a racquet in the second set.
Gauff's resilience in winning despite clearly being below her best highlighted her mental maturation over the past twelve months. She will face either Victoria Azarenka or Emma Navarro in the third round as she continues her title defence in Madrid.
Cirstea, who had defeated Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova in the first round, praised her opponent's courage while expressing frustration at her own inconsistency. "I had my chances but she never stopped competing – that's the difference at this level," the Romanian conceded.
