BBC Sport, carrying the ECB Reporters' Network account, said Hampshire began the day by adopting a patient approach after losing four wickets on the opening evening. Tom Prest and Nick Gubbins absorbed 266 deliveries between them. Gubbins made 38 from 149 balls, while Prest scored 46 as the pair resisted Yorkshire through the first 90 minutes.

Lyth broke the partnership with his off-spin after a sequence of 14 dot balls ended with Gubbins edging to slip. Six overs later he bowled Prest through the gate, taking his 50th first-class wicket in the process. Leg-spinner Jafer Chohan then bowled Ben Brown for his maiden first-class wicket after Brown and Felix Organ had added 25 in 16 overs.

Hill, who had taken three wickets on the first evening, completed his second five-wicket haul of the season and the seventh of his career. He clipped the top of Andrew Neal's off stump and trapped Kyle Abbott leg before, while Ben Coad dismissed Organ to end Hampshire's innings. Both of Hill's five-wicket returns this season have come against Hampshire.

Yorkshire quickly erased the deficit in their second innings as Will Luxton attacked while Lyth initially played more cautiously. Luxton and Sam Whiteman were both bowled, but Lyth accelerated as his innings developed and reached the 124th half-century of his career from 95 balls. His 51 helped Yorkshire establish a meaningful lead despite Hampshire creating several chances in the field.

The contest shifted again late in the day when Lyth edged Felix Organ to slip and nightwatchers Ben Cliff and Chohan also fell, leaving Yorkshire five wickets down. There was an additional concern over Jonny Bairstow, who left the field after hurting a finger while keeping wicket. The report said the extent of the problem was not yet clear and noted that current replacement rules mean he cannot be permanently substituted if the injury prevents him from batting.
