Glenn Maxwell announces international retirement and Victoria farewell
Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing his Australia career to a close after previously stepping away from one-day internationals. The Final Word Cricket Podcast confirmed the announcement in its November 2 episode, whose description also states that his playing career with Victoria is ending.

The decision ends a period in which Maxwell had left his international future unresolved. Cricket.com.au reported in March that he was not retiring from T20 internationals and would assess how his body responded before deciding whether to play again. At that stage, he had not committed to either the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics or the T20 World Cup scheduled for the same year.
That March discussion followed Australia's unsuccessful 2026 T20 World Cup campaign. According to Cricket.com.au, the team lost to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka and missed the semi-finals for a third successive edition. Maxwell said then that he remained in contact with selectors about his availability, while placing greater emphasis on his fitness and movement in the field than on his recent batting and bowling figures.
His earlier departure from ODI cricket was announced in June 2025. ABC News reported that Maxwell finished with 3,990 runs from 149 appearances, averaging 33.81 with a strike rate of 126.70. His contribution extended beyond batting: he also collected 77 wickets and 91 catches. He had made his ODI debut against Afghanistan in 2012 and scored four centuries in the format.
Maxwell's international honours include Australia's ODI World Cup victories in 2015 and 2023 and its T20 World Cup title in 2021. BBC reporting republished by News Room Guyana recalled his unbeaten 201 from 128 deliveries against Afghanistan at the 2023 tournament, an innings played through severe cramp that secured a semi-final place. He also reached a century from 40 balls against the Netherlands during that campaign.
The latest announcement concerns his national and state careers, rather than a complete departure from competitive cricket. AAP reports he will continue franchise cricket, including with Melbourne Stars. That leaves a separate playing commitment beyond the Australia and Victoria roles covered by The Final Word's retirement announcement.
