Gloucester beat Bath 23-5 to stay top after Kingsholm defensive stand
Gloucester remained top of the Prem after beating Bath 23-5 at Kingsholm on Friday, with a defensive performance that survived a spell with only 13 players. According to BBC Sport's match report, the result ended Gloucester's wait for a home league victory over their rivals stretching back to April 2022, when they won 64-0.

The hosts reached half-time 9-5 ahead despite sustained Bath pressure near their line. Ollie Thorley and Ciaran Knight were sent to the sin-bin in the first half, leaving Gloucester temporarily two players short. George Barton's three penalties provided their first nine points before Bath hooker Kepu Tuipulotu scored from a driving maul shortly before the interval. That proved to be the visitors' only score of the match.
Gloucester also had Will Joseph sin-binned after the break, but Bath could not turn their opportunities into further points. Freddie Thomas crossed under the posts midway through the second half, and Max Llewellyn added another try with two minutes remaining. Barton converted both scores to complete a 13-point contribution and put the result beyond Bath.
The victory came seven days after Gloucester drew with Champions Cup holders Bordeaux. Head coach George Skivington had identified the derby as his team's biggest match of the season, and they delivered despite missing injured captain Dewi Lake and centre Seb Atkinson. Speaking to BBC Radio Gloucestershire, Skivington praised his players' resilience, commitment and defensive coordination through the pressure they faced.
For Bath, the defeat was their third in succession across all competitions. BBC Sport reported that five points was their lowest return in a Prem match under Johann van Graan. The head of rugby pointed to an unawarded try shortly after half-time as an important moment, saying his side had reached the opposition tryline repeatedly but needed to improve their ability to ground the ball.
Bath also lost Santiago Carreras and Guy Pepper to injuries. Carreras was facing a scan, with concern over a possible anterior cruciate ligament injury rather than a confirmed diagnosis. Van Graan expressed fears about the seriousness of the full-back's problem. Those setbacks added to a difficult evening for Bath as Gloucester reinforced their early-season position at the top of the table.
