Gloucestershire will switch to a Bristol identity in the T20 Blast from 2027 as competition revenue falls. The plans have drawn criticism from a long-standing member over the county connection.

Gloucestershire will compete under a Bristol identity in the T20 Blast from 2027, ending the use of the county name in that competition as the club seeks new supporters and stronger ticket income. BBC Sport reported that members were told of the plans at a strategy meeting on Wednesday evening at the Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol. The change concerns the T20 team, rather than a renaming across every format.

Chief executive Neil Priscott and head of audience development Jenny Hall presented the club's direction, with board members also attending. According to the BBC, Priscott described a plan to strengthen Gloucestershire's wider identity while developing a separate Bristol-based T20 team capable of attracting a different audience. A further meeting with members was scheduled for Thursday evening in Cheltenham, giving supporters there an opportunity to discuss the proposals.

The financial figures reported by the BBC show why the club is revisiting its approach to the competition. Overall attendances are rising, but the Blast, which accounts for 20% of ticketing revenue, is declining. Revenue from the tournament fell 21% in 2026 compared with 2025. That downturn follows Gloucestershire's first Blast title in 2024, when they beat Somerset at Edgbaston to secure their first silverware in nine years.

The announcement has met opposition from Gloucestershire life member Tim Lezzard, who has followed the club for 40 years. Speaking to BBC Radio Gloucestershire, he acknowledged the need to generate more income but argued that abandoning the county name could alienate supporters, particularly those in its northern areas. He said some people he had spoken with were considering no longer attending if the change went ahead. His comments reflect his own account of the reaction, not a formal survey of members.

There is a precedent for a city identity in the Blast. Warwickshire became Birmingham Bears in 2014, with the club reporting commercial and attendance benefits from the approach. However, they returned to the Warwickshire Bears name in 2026. The BBC reported that chief executive Stuart Cain linked that reversal to the county connection, the club's long-term future and feedback from members.

Fixtures for the 2027 Blast are due on 24 November. Gloucestershire's new team name, kit and logo are expected to be unveiled at the same time, according to the BBC. The broadcaster said it had approached the club for further comment.
