Harmanpreet Kaur has relinquished India's captaincy in all three formats after leading the team to its first global title. Smriti Mandhana is expected to succeed her, according to BBC Sport.

Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as India's women's cricket captain in all three international formats, BBC Sport reported on Tuesday. The 37-year-old batter announced her decision in an Instagram post, saying she believed the team was well placed and wanted to return her focus to the enjoyment of playing. Her announcement concerns the captaincy rather than retirement from cricket.

Kaur's leadership record spans five Tests, 51 one-day internationals and 155 Twenty20 internationals. She first captained India in 2012 and led the country to its first global title at last year's 50-over World Cup. Her most recent match as captain came on 22 September, when India beat Sri Lanka to secure a second consecutive Asian Games title.

In the statement quoted by BBC Sport, Kaur described stepping aside as an emotionally difficult decision after years of commitment to the national side. She said the responsibilities had at times required her to put her individual development, performances and personal ambitions behind the team's needs. She also reflected on the personal cost of decisions made while trying to help other players develop.

Her recent results as captain included contrasting outcomes in England. India won the one-off Test at Lord's in July under her leadership, but had earlier been eliminated in the group stage of the T20 World Cup that month. That exit meant India missed the semi-finals for a second successive edition, alongside the successes Kaur achieved in the longer formats and at the Asian Games.

The announcement followed a meeting in Guwahati a day earlier involving Kaur, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, head coach Amol Muzumdar and Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Devajit Saikia. BBC Sport reported that Mandhana, 30, was expected to take over. The report did not describe her succession as a confirmed appointment, leaving the formal captaincy arrangements to be settled.

India's next scheduled home assignment is against Zimbabwe, with three T20 internationals and three ODIs beginning on 16 October. That series provides the immediate backdrop to the leadership change. Kaur leaves the role with a World Cup title and another Asian Games gold among her achievements, while her statement points to a continued playing career without the same captaincy responsibilities.
