Helm Four-Wicket Haul Gives Middlesex 212-Run Lead Over Lancashire

Middlesex ended the second day of their County Championship Division Two match against Lancashire in control, reaching 116-2 in their second innings for an overall lead of 212 runs at Merchant Taylors’ School in Northwood. According to the ECB Reporters’ Network report carried by BBC Sport, 19 wickets fell during a day dominated by seam bowling.

Lancashire began by completing Middlesex’s first innings for 247. James Anderson took 3-40 despite continuing to manage a calf problem, while Ben Walkden and George Balderson also claimed three wickets each. Luke Hollman, unbeaten on 54 overnight, did not add to his score, and Ryan Higgins made 44 as Middlesex fell short of a batting bonus point.

Middlesex answered decisively with the ball. Tom Helm recorded season-best figures of 4-40, supported by Higgins and Naavya Sharma, who each returned 3-39. Lancashire slipped to 35-4 after Keaton Jennings was dismissed for one, Harry Singh edged Helm behind, Marcus Harris was given out leg before, and Sharma bowled Rocky Flintoff.

Matty Hurst led Lancashire’s resistance with 46 after opening the innings, while Walkden contributed 28. Their efforts could not prevent the visitors being dismissed for 151. Helm and Higgins removed the lower order, leaving Middlesex with a first-innings advantage of 96.

Lancashire took two wickets when Middlesex batted again. Tom Bailey bowled Sam Robson, and Balderson removed Hollman, but Max Holden counterattacked to finish unbeaten on 50. He reached his half-century in the final over as Middlesex advanced to 116-2 at stumps.

The match remains in Middlesex’s hands entering day three, with eight second-innings wickets intact and Lancashire already facing a substantial deficit. Both sides had collected three points by the close of play, but the hosts’ bowling response and Holden’s late acceleration created the clearest separation in the contest.
