Hollioake reveals coaching doubts behind Kent's Championship recovery

Kent head coach Adam Hollioake has revealed that he questioned whether coaching was the right career for him earlier this year, before the county's sharp improvement in the Championship. Speaking to BBC Radio Kent, the former England all-rounder said doubts had persisted while he tried to convince his players that results would improve.

Kent finished bottom of Division Two in 2025, winning only two of their 14 Championship matches in Hollioake's first season in charge. They have won seven of 13 this year and collected 78 more points than in the previous campaign. Their most recent victory was a seven-wicket success against Lancashire after defeat at Derbyshire.

Hollioake told the BBC that maintaining standards and returning to a straightforward method had underpinned the recovery. He described an approach based on dealing with each match separately, rather than allowing the previous result to determine how the team played. He acknowledged there had been moments when he was unsure his reassurance would prove justified.

In a separate message published by Kent on September 23, Hollioake credited the improvement to people throughout the club, not just the playing squad. He said staff on and off the field had helped build conditions in which the team could recover from last year's disappointment. Members and supporters were also included in his assessment of that collective contribution.

Kent's official profile records that Hollioake was appointed in December 2024 on a deal running until at least the end of 2027. His coaching background includes work with England Lions, Queensland Cricket and Pakistan, followed by an assistant role at Surrey during 2024. As a player, he captained Surrey to nine trophies and also led England in one-day international cricket.

The recovery has not yet secured promotion. In his club message, Hollioake cautioned that Kent's four-point advantage could disappear quickly during a four-day game. He said the coaching staff had supplied preparation, tactical plans and information, with the players responsible for converting that work into the final step towards Division One.
