Hull Preserve Unbeaten Start in Scoreless Aston Villa Draw

Hull City extended its unbeaten start to the Premier League season with a 0-0 draw against Aston Villa at the MKM Stadium. The Guardian reported that the promoted side moved to seven points from three matches and recorded a third consecutive clean sheet, while Villa remained without a goal after its opening three league fixtures.

Hull came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 65th minute. Mohamed Belloumi collected the ball following a short corner and curled a left-footed shot against the crossbar. The Algeria winger had also troubled Villa earlier, twice beating Ross Barkley before creating danger with a low cross from the right.

Villa had an early opportunity when Nicolas Jackson headed Ian Maatsen's cross wide in the second minute. George Hemmings then produced the visitors' only shot on target in the 13th minute, but Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis made a comfortable save. It was also Villa's first effort on target of the league season, according to The Guardian.

The visitors created clearer openings after halftime but failed to convert them. Captain John McGinn lifted a shot over the bar from inside the penalty area in the 50th minute. Three minutes later, Hemmings moved beyond Hull captain Lewie Coyle and cut the ball back to Emiliano Buendía, who sent his attempt over.

Both teams threatened late. Hull substitute Lucas Herrington, playing on his 19th birthday, blocked Tyrone Mings's shot. At the other end, Aston Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki denied Mohamed-Ali Cho from close range before Oli McBurnie failed to make clean contact with a Ryan Giles cross. Neither side found the decisive finish.

Hull's seven-point start also includes an opening-day win over Manchester United and a victory at Coventry. Manager Sergej Jakirovic, who signed a two-year contract extension on Friday, said his team had demonstrated it could compete at this level. Villa manager Unai Emery acknowledged that his side needed to improve its finishing as it continues rebuilding after a summer in which 10 new players arrived.
