Ingebrigtsen Apologizes for Rivals Remark but Maintains Hocker Criticism

Jakob Ingebrigtsen has apologized for describing his rivals as losers following Friday's men's 1500-meter Diamond League final in Brussels, while maintaining his criticism of Olympic champion Cole Hocker and Hocker's team. The Guardian reported that the Norwegian issued a statement on Saturday after his post-race comments drew attention beyond the result itself.

Ingebrigtsen finished fourth in a close race, recording a season-best time of 3 minutes 30.52 seconds. He had returned to competition in August following an 11-month absence caused by an Achilles sheath injury. Despite the season-best performance, the double Olympic champion expressed strong disappointment with his race before criticizing how other athletes approached it.

His later statement separated his two complaints. Ingebrigtsen acknowledged that his description of the field was inappropriate and apologized for it. However, he continued to object to the approach taken by Hocker's camp, saying the race had been presented to athletes and organizers as an attempt at a particular fast pace with a pacemaker supplied by Hocker's team.

According to The Guardian, Ingebrigtsen ended up following the pacemakers when the main group did not commit to their tempo. He said his criticism was not an effort to excuse his fourth-place finish and accepted that his own performance had not been good enough. His remaining dispute concerned what he regarded as a failure to follow through on the stated pacing plan.

Ingebrigtsen also said that he and Hocker spoke after the race and considered the matter resolved. The public disagreement nevertheless continued when Hocker's agent, Ray Flynn, criticized the Norwegian in comments emailed to Dagbladet. Ingebrigtsen responded that visible emotion and debate after races could help generate interest in athletics.

The two runners could compete at the Ultimate Championships in Budapest next week, although their programs may not produce another immediate 1500-meter meeting. Ingebrigtsen is entered in both the 1500 and 5,000 meters, but The Guardian cited Dagbladet as reporting that he is now likely to concentrate on the 5,000. That possibility remains unconfirmed, leaving the next chapter of the rivalry uncertain.
