Jim Furyk has pledged to change the United States Ryder Cup programme after repeated defeats in foursomes, identifying preparation and pairings as areas requiring improvement. Speaking at Adare Manor on Tuesday, October 6, the American captain said his team could not treat its recent alternate-shot results as an isolated problem, BBC Sport reported.

The Americans collected only three of the 16 points available in foursomes across the past two Ryder Cups. Furyk said captains needed to improve both the combinations they selected and the way players prepared for those matches. He also said he would demand more from his squad than previous American teams had been asked to do. The comments set out a commitment to change, rather than a detailed new training programme.

Some administrative changes are already in place. According to PGA Tour reporting, Furyk has shortened the period in which players can earn qualifying points, with the 2027 standings beginning at The American Express in January. The revised approach is intended to favour players performing well closer to the competition. He has also replaced Scouts Consulting Group with an analytics team led by Justin Ray and Hunter Stewart.

Furyk expects strong participation in a team scouting visit to Adare Manor next summer before The Open Championship, the PGA Tour reported. He has already visited the Irish venue several times, with Collin Morikawa accompanying him on one trip. Those visits form part of the preparations, but the specific changes to foursomes practice have not yet been explained in detail.

The Ryder Cup's official report also described Furyk working on travel arrangements, team spaces and the atmosphere he wants to create within the squad. He said his ideas were intended to shape the American programme beyond the next match. Europe captain Luke Donald, meanwhile, said his own planning remained a work in progress, including how to integrate potential newcomers and keep the approach fresh for returning players.

Furyk described the Americans as underdogs, with their most recent Ryder Cup victory in Europe dating to 1993. Donald rejected any suggestion that Europe's home record allowed room for complacency and said he expected a strong US side. Adare Manor will host the competition from September 17 to 19, 2027, with the Americans seeking to reverse successive Ryder Cup defeats.
