The 46-year-old retired from playing in 2018 after making 462 Hampshire appearances across all formats and scoring 19,723 runs. Born in Winchester, the opening batter progressed through the county's development ranks before making his debut in 2001. He captained Hampshire from 2012 to 2015 and won five trophies as a player.

Adams told the club that deciding to leave had been difficult, but that he felt the moment was right to challenge himself elsewhere. In comments also carried by BBC Sport, he said he would continue supporting Hampshire and intended to return to see the team and former colleagues.

Hampshire's announcement detailed a coaching career that began with work overseeing the men's Second XI after his retirement. He became lead batting coach in 2022, the year the Hawks won the men's Vitality Blast. He subsequently guided Hampshire to the 2025 Metro Bank One Day Cup final, where they finished runners-up.

The club credited Adams with 27 centuries and 112 half-centuries during his playing career. Among his contributions to Hampshire's 2012 white-ball double was an innings of 66 against Warwickshire in the CB40 final at Lord's. That performance made him Hampshire's leading scorer in the match and earned him the Player of the Match award.

Hampshire also highlighted two major partnerships: a stand of 373 with Michael Carberry against Somerset in 2011 and one of 367 alongside Sean Ervine against Warwickshire in 2017. Those innings form part of a playing record that stretched over 17 years before his transition into coaching.

Director of cricket Giles White paid tribute to Adams's commitment across his roles as player, captain and coach. In the club statement, White praised his work ethic and team-first attitude, while wishing Adams and his family well for their move to Australia.
