João Pedro earns Chelsea draw as Belloumi double keeps Hull unbeaten

João Pedro scored in the 66th minute as Chelsea drew 2-2 with Hull City at Stamford Bridge on September 12. According to Opta Analyst's match report, the result left promoted Hull third with eight points from four Premier League games, one point above Chelsea.

Morgan Rogers put the hosts ahead after seven minutes, finishing a move set up by João Pedro. Hull responded through Mohamed Belloumi, who capitalised on Jorrel Hato's failure to deal with Ryan Giles' cross. Belloumi scored again six minutes later after Semi Ajayi's header struck the crossbar, giving the visitors a 2-1 advantage before the interval and leaving Chelsea chasing the game.

Cole Palmer supplied the cutback for João Pedro's equaliser, but neither team could find a decisive third goal. Opta Analyst reported that Mohamed-Ali Cho had an opportunity to win the match for Hull in the 88th minute, only to be denied by Emiliano Martínez.

The draw extended a defensive sequence that has become a significant concern for Chelsea. BBC Sport reported that they have conceded at least twice in all four opening league fixtures, something they last did in 2015. Their nine goals conceded contrast with 10 scored, while their run without a league clean sheet has reached 20 matches, stretching back to January, the BBC said.

Speaking after the match, manager Xabi Alonso said Chelsea needed greater solidity and control, according to BBC Sport. He acknowledged that his side had chances to win but remained vulnerable to opposition attacks. Alonso also said his switch to a back four reflected the qualities of the players selected, rather than being a specific response to the defensive problems, and described Hato's half-time withdrawal as tactical.

Alonso identified improvements needed against open play, set-pieces and long passes, rather than attributing the goals conceded to one type of threat. He said new players and staff would need time to develop better control. For now, Chelsea's attacking output has not been matched by their defending, with another early lead failing to deliver victory.
