Kent seal eight-wicket win over Gloucestershire after promotion confirmed

Kent completed an eight-wicket victory over Gloucestershire at Canterbury after their promotion to Division One of the County Championship had already been confirmed elsewhere. Northamptonshire's defeat by Middlesex at Lord's removed the threat from Kent's only remaining rivals, allowing the hosts to begin their final run chase with second place secured.

According to the ECB Reporters' Network report published by BBC Sport, Matt Milnes led Kent's bowling effort with figures of 5-33 as Gloucestershire were dismissed for 241 in their second innings. That left a target of 118, which Kent reached at 120-2. Sam Northeast finished unbeaten on 49, while Zak Crawley contributed 44 to the successful chase.

Kent had established control through a first-innings total of 353, built around Ben Compton's 126, in reply to Gloucestershire's 229. Milnes had taken 4-55 in that innings before adding his five-wicket haul. On the third day, the visitors lost overnight batters Miles Hammond and Tom Boorman within seven balls, with Khaled Ahmed and Milnes making the breakthroughs.

Kamran Dhariwal resisted with 66 and helped Gloucestershire move into the lead, but wickets continued to fall around him. James Bracey was caught at mid-on off Milnes, leaving the visitors 150-6 at lunch. Tawanda Muyeye later took his 27th Championship catch of the season to dismiss Che Simmons off Keith Dudgeon. News of Northamptonshire's defeat reached the ground with Gloucestershire eight wickets down, drawing applause from the crowd.

Matt Taylor added 34 before the innings ended, giving Gloucestershire a modest total to defend. Crawley began the chase with a boundary and survived a dropped chance two balls later. JT Langridge trapped Compton lbw for four, and Crawley was subsequently caught off Sai Kishore. Northeast then finished the match emphatically: with 12 required, he struck Ollie Price for six and followed with consecutive fours to complete Kent's eighth win of the season.

Kent collected 22 points from the match to Gloucestershire's three and will move up alongside Division Two champions Durham. Head coach Adam Hollioake described relief at completing the promotion task after a difficult start to the campaign. In comments carried by BBC Sport, he credited the players' response to those early setbacks and their execution of the team's plans for the turnaround.
