Kevin Pietersen joins England white-ball staff as specialist mentor

England has appointed Kevin Pietersen as a specialist mentor to its white-ball teams for the build-up to the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. The Guardian reported that the former England batter will join head coach Brendon McCullum’s backroom staff for the next year, with the arrangement announced on Monday. Pietersen’s assignment is due to begin with England’s white-ball fixtures against Sri Lanka in September and continue through the 50-over World Cup in Southern Africa late next year. The competition is scheduled to be staged in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, giving his background particular relevance to England’s preparations. The role covers the period in which the one-day side will shape its plans for those host conditions.

The appointment brings Pietersen, 46, back into the senior England environment for the first time since his international playing career ended after the 2013-14 Ashes series in Australia. His return is in a coaching and advisory capacity, with the England and Wales Cricket Board describing the position specifically as a specialist mentor role.

According to The Guardian, McCullum expects England’s batters to benefit from Pietersen’s experience and knowledge of performing at international level. Pietersen will contribute to the team’s wider planning group during a 12-month period aimed at preparing the squad for a global tournament in conditions he knows well.

He joins a white-ball staff that already includes assistant coaches Marcus Trescothick and Jeetan Patel. Sarah Taylor is part of the set-up as a fielding and wicketkeeping specialist, while former New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee has responsibility for the pace bowlers.

The ECB said Pietersen’s upbringing in South Africa should help the one-day international side as it prepares for a World Cup spread across three southern African countries. Pietersen said he was proud to wear England colours again and eager to work with the squad, while McCullum welcomed the addition of a former player whose expertise will now be directed toward England’s next World Cup campaign.
