Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli leads the Formula 1 championship by 50 points after six victories in 11 races. The 19-year-old begins the second half of the season at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Kimi Antonelli will begin the second half of the Formula 1 season with a 50-point championship lead after a dominant opening 11 races. BBC Sport reported that the 19-year-old Mercedes driver has collected six wins and six pole positions, establishing an advantage over team-mate George Russell in only his second F1 campaign.

The championship resumes at the Dutch Grand Prix this weekend, with the race scheduled for August 23. It will be Antonelli's final grand prix before he turns 20. BBC Sport reported that six of the seven Formula 1 race victories achieved by teenage drivers belong to Antonelli, with Max Verstappen accounting for the other.

Antonelli's current position represents a sharp change from a difficult rookie season. He produced notable performances by out-qualifying Russell in Jeddah and taking sprint pole in Miami, but struggled during the European portion of the calendar. Mercedes trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin said a rear-suspension change made the car nervous and affected Antonelli's confidence.

Team principal Toto Wolff also identified a nine-race stretch that fell below expectations. Antonelli crashed during practice at Monza in both 2024 and 2025, and Wolff told BBC Sport that he challenged the young driver to reverse the trend after the second incident. Mercedes then saw progress once the championship left Europe late last season.

Antonelli entered the Mercedes driver academy after being noticed in karting at age 11. He won championships across Formula 4 in 2022 and Formula Regional in 2023 before Mercedes prepared him for Formula 1 with an extensive testing program in older cars. Shovlin said the team was impressed by how quickly he approached the limit during those sessions.

The Italian now has an opportunity to become Formula 1's youngest world champion. BBC Sport reported that Mercedes did not expect the scale of his improvement this season, even after encouraging signs at the end of his rookie year. With 11 races completed, Antonelli's six victories and 50-point margin place him firmly in control as the campaign resumes in the Netherlands.
