Virat Kohli passed fifty as India pursued a revised target of 143 in 32 overs against New Zealand. The visitors were 102 for one after 16 overs, with the first ODI still in progress.

Virat Kohli reached a half-century as India moved to 102 for one after 16 overs in their rain-affected first one-day international against New Zealand at Eden Park on Wednesday. BBC Sport's live scorecard showed the visitors needing another 41 runs from 16 overs in Auckland, with nine wickets available. The match remained in progress at that stage.

Kohli was unbeaten on 59 from 40 deliveries, having hit ten fours and a six, while captain Shubman Gill had made 35 from 50 balls. The pair had taken India's second-wicket partnership to 101 after Rohit Sharma fell for a six-ball duck. Kyle Jamieson dismissed Sharma, caught by Mitchell Santner, with the final delivery of the opening over.

The chase had been interrupted with India on 54 for one after 10.5 overs, according to CREX's report from the match. India had initially been pursuing 186, but the resumed innings was reduced to 32 overs with a target of 143. By the halfway point of that revised allocation, Gill and Kohli were still together and India had passed three figures.

Earlier, New Zealand were dismissed for 185 in 40.2 overs after Gill chose to field. PTI's reporting, published by Rediff, detailed how Arshdeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar shared seven wickets. Arshdeep finished with four for 70 from ten overs, while Brar took three for 44 from 9.2. Their combined return accounted for most of the wickets in an innings that ended well before the scheduled limit.

Anshul Kamboj supplied two further wickets while conceding only 22 runs across his ten overs. PTI reported that 46 of his deliveries were dot balls. He removed Santner and Nathan Smith as India maintained pressure through the middle of the innings, with Kohli catching Smith at slip. Daryl Mitchell was run out following work from Sharma and wicketkeeper KL Rahul.

New Zealand's late resistance included Blair Tickner hitting three sixes in Arshdeep's final over to lift the total beyond 180, PTI reported. That recovery gave the hosts more runs to defend, but the subsequent rain interruption changed the chase. Kohli's fifty and the unbroken partnership had put India within 41 runs of the revised target; a result had not yet been recorded in the verified scorecard.
