Lamine Camara's £47.1m Chelsea Move Collapses After Medical

Lamine Camara will remain at Monaco after his proposed £47.1m transfer to Chelsea collapsed shortly after the summer window closed. BBC Sport reported that the 22-year-old Senegal midfielder had completed a medical in France on Tuesday evening, but the clubs did not complete the move after the 23:00 BST deadline.

Chelsea had previously seen two bids rejected by Monaco before a late breakthrough appeared to put the transfer within reach. According to the BBC report, Monaco lowered their asking price as uncertainty grew around a proposed Everton move for United States forward Folarin Balogun. That change allowed Chelsea to pursue Camara at about £47m.

The Premier League club expected the agreement to be completed and had already allowed Enzo Fernandez to join Manchester City for a joint-British record £125m fee in anticipation of Camara arriving. BBC Sport reported that Chelsea were angered when Monaco later informed them in writing that the Camara deal would not proceed. Chelsea said they were not given an explanation.

Sources familiar with the situation told BBC Sport they believed Monaco's decision was connected to Balogun's proposed Everton transfer. Monaco were reported to have preferred selling Balogun and to need a major departure during the window. When that move appeared uncertain, the conditions for selling Camara reportedly became more favourable; when it returned to the picture, Monaco's position on Camara changed.

Camara had remained involved on the field throughout the negotiations. He played in Monaco's 2-0 victory over Marseille on Sunday, while Balogun was omitted from the squad. The midfielder has also won 37 senior caps for Senegal, underlining the experience Chelsea were seeking despite his age.

The immediate outcome is clear even though the clubs have not offered matching public accounts of why the agreement failed: Camara stays with Monaco and Chelsea finish the window without the midfielder they expected to add. BBC Sport said it had contacted Monaco for comment, while its report preserved uncertainty over precisely what caused the late reversal.
