Brazilian Bowler Laura Cardoso Shatters T20 Record with Nine-Wicket Haul
In a display of bowling brilliance that rewrote cricket history, Brazil's Laura Cardoso achieved the unthinkable by becoming the first player ever to claim nine wickets in a T20 international match. The 21-year-old seamer delivered extraordinary figures of 9-4 against Lesotho, dismantling the opposition in just three devastating overs.
The record-breaking performance unfolded during the Kalahari Women's T20 tournament in Gaborone, Botswana, where Cardoso single-handedly destroyed Lesotho's batting lineup. Chasing a formidable target of 203 runs, Lesotho were bundled out for a paltry 13 runs in just 6.2 overs, with Cardoso accounting for nine of the ten dismissals.
Cardoso's remarkable spell began with a sequence that left spectators and teammates in disbelief. She struck with five consecutive deliveries, claiming the last three wickets of the second over before continuing her rampage with the first two deliveries of the fourth over. This left Lesotho reeling at 8-5, their hopes of a competitive chase already in tatters.
The young seamer's dominance continued throughout her spell, recording two maiden overs while systematically picking apart the batting order. She added two more victims in her second over, then claimed another pair in the fifth over. Only a stumping by teammate Marianne Artur prevented Cardoso from achieving the impossible feat of taking all ten wickets.
The achievement surpasses several significant milestones in cricket history. Cardoso now holds the outright record for best bowling figures in T20 internationals, bettering Bhutan's Sonam Yeshey, who previously held the mark with eight wickets for seven runs against Myanmar in 2025. In women's cricket specifically, she demolished the previous best of 7-0, set by Indonesia's Rohmalia Rohmalia against Mongolia in 2024.
Cricket Brasil president Roberta Moretti, who witnessed every dismissal from her position at first slip, was effusive in her praise for the young bowler. "I don't think this is the end. She's still only 21 and I believe Laura is someone who can one day play at the elite level in England and Australia," Moretti told reporters.
The president highlighted Cardoso's journey through Brazil's cricket development system, emphasizing her work ethic and passion for the game. "She came from one of our grassroots programmes and through all of the pathways and is one of the greatest cricketers Brazil has produced," Moretti added.
Cardoso's phenomenal performance has elevated Brazil's profile in international cricket and demonstrated the growing strength of the sport in South America. The team remains unbeaten in five matches at the six-team tournament, with their star bowler leading from the front.
This historic achievement represents more than just statistical excellence; it showcases the global reach of cricket and the emergence of new talent from unexpected corners of the cricket world. At just 21, Cardoso has already etched her name in the sport's history books and appears destined for even greater heights in her promising career.
