Lehmann century keeps Hampshire alive against Nottinghamshire

Jake Lehmann's unbeaten century kept Hampshire in contention against Nottinghamshire on the second day of their County Championship Division One match at Trent Bridge. BBC Sport reported that Lehmann finished unbeaten on 115 as Hampshire reached 267-7 at the close, 110 runs short of Nottinghamshire's first-innings total of 377.

Hampshire began the day on 12-1 and immediately lost Felix Organ for six. Olly Stone removed the opener with the first ball of the morning, finding a defensive edge that was caught behind. Toby Albert and Nick Gubbins then steadied the innings before both were dismissed lbw in the space of four deliveries for 31 and 35 respectively.

Tom Giles accounted for Albert in only his second first-class match, while Dillon Pennington dismissed Gubbins with a full delivery from around the wicket. Lehmann responded aggressively and reached lunch on 33 from 29 balls, with Hampshire 114-3. He went on to anchor the innings as wickets continued to fall around him.

Joe Weatherley was lbw to Stone for 25 after leaving a delivery, and Hampshire's scoring slowed when Liam Patterson-White began a tight spell of left-arm spin. Captain Ben Brown was caught at first slip attempting a cut, before Fraser Sheat removed 18-year-old Ben Mayes for one. Those wickets left Hampshire 165-6 and in need of a sustained partnership.

Lehmann found that support from Scott Currie, who faced 143 balls for 35. Their seventh-wicket stand added 97 and occupied 38 overs, carrying Hampshire through a difficult period either side of tea. Patterson-White conceded only 28 runs in 21 wicketless overs, but Nottinghamshire did not make another breakthrough immediately after taking the second new ball at 216.

Sheat eventually bowled Currie with 31 deliveries remaining in the day, shortly after Lehmann had completed his hundred from 160 balls. Lehmann closed one run short of matching his best score in England, the 116 he made during a spell with Yorkshire in 2016. Nottinghamshire collected five bonus points to Hampshire's four, but Currie's resistance and Lehmann's unbeaten innings ensured the match remained open heading into day three.
