Leus du Plooy to Leave Middlesex After South Africa Recommitment

Middlesex captain Leus du Plooy will leave the county at the end of the 2026 season after deciding to recommit to South Africa in pursuit of an international opportunity. Middlesex announced the planned departure on September 7, while BBC Sport also reported that the 31-year-old's change in status will bring his time at the club to an earlier end than his contract had envisaged.

Du Plooy's existing Middlesex agreement was due to run through 2027 and depended on him remaining qualified as a local player. According to the club, recommitting to his native South Africa means he will be classified as an overseas player, invalidating that deal. The decision follows his previously stated interest in representing England, but his focus has now shifted toward the possibility of playing for South Africa.

The left-handed batter joined Middlesex before the 2024 season after five years with Derbyshire. Middlesex said he has since made 38 first-class appearances for the county, scoring 2,795 runs at an average of 51.75. His seven centuries for the club include an unbeaten 263 against Gloucestershire at Lord's in 2025, his highest first-class score for Middlesex.

His contribution has also extended to the shorter format. The club listed 31 Twenty20 appearances and 594 runs for Du Plooy during his Middlesex career. He became captain of the men's side in June 2025, taking over from Toby Roland-Jones and Steven Eskinazi, and received his county cap in May 2026.

Du Plooy said through the Middlesex announcement that leaving was a difficult decision and that the chance to explore South Africa selection was tied to a long-held ambition. He thanked the club for supporting him as both a player and captain. His comments framed the move as an attempt to find out where the opportunity could lead, rather than confirmation that an international place has been secured.

Middlesex director of cricket Alan Coleman said the county was disappointed to lose Du Plooy but supported his international ambitions. Coleman highlighted the batter's first-class average above 50 and said he would remain welcome at Middlesex as an overseas player in the future. Neither the club's statement nor the BBC Sport report announced a South African team selection or Du Plooy's next domestic contract, leaving those parts of his plans unresolved.
