Liam Millar's Late Goal Gives Hull Second Straight Premier League Win

Liam Millar's 82nd-minute goal earned Hull City an away victory over Coventry City and extended the Tigers' perfect start to their Premier League return. Hull had less of the ball against another promoted side but limited Coventry's opportunities. The hosts recorded almost 70% possession, yet BBC Sport said Hull's central defenders, including Semi Ajayi, Nobel Mendy and Lucas Gourna-Douath, contained Coventry's attack. Striker Oli McBurnie also provided a persistent outlet as the visitors stayed in the contest.

The match remained scoreless as it entered its closing stages, increasing the pressure on Coventry to turn possession into a result. Millar then delivered the decisive moment in the 82nd minute. Coventry could not recover, leaving Hull with six points from their opening two league fixtures and second in the early table at the conclusion of the match.

The start carries a notable historical marker. Hull are the first promoted club to win their first two Premier League matches since Huddersfield Town did so in 2017. BBC Sport also noted that only three teams have been relegated after beginning a top-flight season with two victories: Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2011-12, Hull in 2016-17 and West Bromwich Albion in 2017-18.

McBurnie said Hull did not feel they had anything to prove and stressed that the club had earned its place by winning promotion. Manager Sergej Jakirovic continues to frame survival as the target despite the strong opening. Hull secured promotion by beating Middlesbrough in last season's Championship play-off final and have now followed that achievement with consecutive Premier League wins.

Coventry, meanwhile, have lost their first two matches since returning to the top flight after 25 years away. Their opening defeat came at Arsenal, and the schedule next sends them to Manchester City. Manager Frank Lampard told BBC Sport that he sensed apprehension in his team against Hull and said Coventry needed to adjust quickly to the demands of the division.
