Luka Dončić scores 42 as Lakers beat Heat 138-117
Luka Dončić scored 42 points as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Miami Heat 138-117 on Monday night, extending a prolific start to the season for the Slovenian guard. According to the Guardian's report, the victory left Los Angeles with a 6-2 record, while Dončić's season scoring average reached 38.3 points per game, the highest in the NBA.

Dončić also supplied 13 assists and collected seven rebounds, contributing beyond his scoring in the 21-point victory. The performance continued a five-game stretch in which he has averaged 43.4 points. That recent run has exceeded even his league-leading average for the season, with Monday's total adding another 40-point performance to his early-season output for Los Angeles.
Miami's Giannis Antetokounmpo responded by placing Dončić among basketball's greatest scorers. In comments carried by the Guardian, Antetokounmpo said his assessment was not limited to players currently in the league. Asked to clarify the scope of his praise, he explicitly included the game's all-time scorers, rather than simply comparing Dončić with his contemporaries.
The career averages cited in the report offer a statistical measure of that scoring production. Dončić averages 29.32 points per game across his NBA career, behind only Michael Jordan at 30.12 and Wilt Chamberlain at 30.07. Those figures concern scoring averages rather than total points accumulated, an important distinction when considering Antetokounmpo's assessment of the 27-year-old.
On the cumulative scoring list, Dončić stands 165th with 15,289 points, according to the same report. His position on that list is therefore substantially different from his standing by career average. Antetokounmpo's comments were an appraisal of Dončić's scoring ability, not a claim that the Lakers player already holds the NBA record for total career points.
Lakers teammate Quentin Grimes also described the confidence Dončić's current form inspires. In the Guardian's account, Grimes said he expected even difficult attempts to fall, pointing to step-back three-pointers, floaters and unconventional shots. His reaction accompanied a night on which Dončić combined a 42-point scoring contribution with double-digit assists as Los Angeles secured its sixth win.
