Manchester City beat 10-man Liverpool 3-0 after Gravenberch dismissal
Manchester City won 3-0 at Liverpool on Sunday, with Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki scoring after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off. The Independent's match report identified the midfielder's dismissal as the decisive shift in a contest that had remained goalless until the second half, before City took control against ten men.

Liverpool's official report confirmed that Andoni Iraola gave Lewis Koumas his first Premier League start, with Dominik Szoboszlai, Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak unavailable. The opening half produced few clear opportunities. Alexis Mac Allister sent an effort off target, while Gianluigi Donnarumma dealt with a low Victor Munoz shot and Alisson saved from Enzo Fernandez.
Liverpool threatened more after the interval but could not find the opening goal. BBC Sport's coverage noted Donnarumma's saves from Koumas and Gravenberch, which kept the score level during that spell. Haaland also missed a major chance before eventually scoring. Doku entered the game in the 56th minute, replacing Iliman Ndiaye, and soon became central to City's attacking threat.
The breakthrough in the balance of the match came in the 62nd minute. According to Liverpool's report, Gravenberch received his second booking while trying to stop Doku starting a counter-attack. City then scored twice in quick succession: Haaland finished after Doku carried the ball into the area, before the Belgian cut inside and curled his own shot into the top corner.
Cherki added the third from close range after a flicked pass by substitute Josko Gvardiol. Liverpool's report recorded the result as their first defeat of the 2026-27 season. A match that had offered the home side opportunities shortly after half-time had instead ended with three unanswered goals following the red card.
The fixture was City's first since the verdict in their financial-rules case, BBC Sport reported separately. Sanctions have not yet been announced, and the club has appealed while continuing to deny wrongdoing. A separate independent appeal board will consider that challenge, leaving the disciplinary process unresolved even as City returned to league action with a victory at Anfield.
