Mansell Sees Hamilton as Reinvigorated Force in 2026 Ferrari Charge
1992 Formula 1 world champion Nigel Mansell says Lewis Hamilton looks like a driver with renewed purpose at Ferrari this season, backing the seven-time champion to mount a serious title challenge.

Nigel Mansell knows a thing or two about what it takes to compete for championships late in a Formula 1 career. The 1992 world champion also understands what it means to make the leap to Ferrari. And right now, the British legend sees something different in Lewis Hamilton.

Mansell has declared Hamilton reinvigorated and fired up heading into the 2026 season, suggesting the seven-time champion appears genuinely capable of mounting a serious charge for an eighth world title. It is a significant endorsement from a man who made his own late-career Ferrari move and knows the unique pressures that come with racing in red.

Hamilton, now 41, is entering his 20th consecutive Formula 1 season, a record that puts him alone ahead of Rubens Barrichello on the all-time list. After a miserable 2025 campaign in which he failed to score a podium finish for the first time in his F1 career, the British driver described it himself as his worst season ever. Ferrari finished a disappointing fourth in the Constructors' Championship, and Hamilton ended the year 267 points behind champion Lando Norris.

The 2026 season represents a complete reset. New engines, chassis, fuels and aerodynamics have fundamentally changed the sport, with energy deployment now as critical as raw speed. Max Verstappen previewed the new era as Formula E on steroids. For Hamilton, the upheaval may play into his hands. His smooth driving style and technical feel have traditionally translated well to cars that reward precision, and there is genuine optimism inside the Ferrari garage that the SF-26 can deliver consistent race-winning pace.

After the Japanese Grand Prix, Hamilton sits fourth in the drivers' championship with 41 points, behind teammate Charles Leclerc in third. Kimi Antonelli leads for Mercedes with 72 points, followed by George Russell. It is early days, but the trajectory is upward.

Mansell's backing carries particular weight given his own career arc. He won the 1992 title with Williams before joining Ferrari in 1993, and though that campaign ended in disappointment, he understands better than most what it takes to recalibrate and fight at the front. If Mansell sees a driver who has recaptured that essential hunger, the paddock will be watching closely to see if Hamilton can convert renewed confidence into race wins and podiums before the season is out.
