Johan Manzambi scored the only goal as Aston Villa beat Newcastle 1-0 at St James’ Park. The result brought Unai Emery his 100th Premier League win as a manager.

Johan Manzambi’s first-half header gave Aston Villa a 1-0 victory at Newcastle United on Saturday, securing Unai Emery’s 100th Premier League win as a manager. According to Louise Taylor’s match report for the Guardian, Villa’s success at St James’ Park was their fourth victory in five matches across all competitions, although they had entered the game with only one league win this season.

The decisive moment came in the 36th minute when Manzambi escaped Malick Thiaw’s attention to meet João Gomes’s cross with a header. The 21-year-old Switzerland attacking midfielder had joined Villa from Freiburg during the summer after Newcastle had also pursued him. His goal separated teams who finished the match level on points and gave Villa another positive result after their difficult league start.

Newcastle’s first-half problems extended beyond the goal. Joelinton and Sven Botman were booked for challenges on Manzambi and Nicolas Jackson respectively. A video assistant referee review of Botman’s tackle left the original yellow-card decision unchanged. Villa then nearly doubled their lead when Emiliano Buendía’s effort struck the inside of a post, rebounded off goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek’s back and was eventually cleared by Lewis Hall.

The hosts produced their only shot on target early in the second half, with Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki making a flying save to deny Botman. At the other end, substitute Ross Barkley almost scored with his first touch, but Hornicek pushed his effort around a post. Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle later introduced Dan Burn as a striker for the closing minutes, without finding an equaliser.

The defeat followed Newcastle’s 4-1 loss at Coventry on Monday and extended their run without a Premier League home clean sheet to 13 matches, matching a club sequence from 1998-99. Opta figures included in the Guardian’s report also showed that Yoane Wissa attempted seven shots without hitting the target. Jaissle pointed to his young team’s decision-making and said they needed to learn quickly following significant summer departures.

Emery stressed the importance of winning after Villa’s poor start while maintaining high standards. His managerial milestone came in his 197th Premier League match, alongside 44 draws and 53 defeats, according to Opta’s figures. Only eight managers have reached 100 victories in fewer games in the competition.
