Martin Andersson's Unbeaten 129 Lifts Derbyshire to 300 Against Kent

Martin Andersson's unbeaten 129 carried Derbyshire to 300 before Kent closed on 11-1 on the opening day of their County Championship Division Two match in Derby. Hasan Mahmud created that dramatic opening for Kent, drawing an edge from Harry Came that Zak Crawley held at first slip before trapping Matthew Montgomery leg before wicket. Montgomery's dismissal was his second consecutive first-ball duck. Wayne Madsen survived the hat-trick delivery and began a partial recovery with Yousaf Bin Naeem.

Khaled Ahmed, making his Kent debut, then removed Bin Naeem and Madsen to leave Derbyshire 64-4. Andersson responded alongside Luis Reece, who was playing his first match for almost a month after a shoulder injury. Their fifth-wicket stand produced 91 runs from 191 balls before Reece, having made 32, edged Ekansh Singh through to the wicketkeeper.

Brooke Guest reached double figures after three straight scoreless innings but was trapped leg before by Mahmud, and Ben Aitchison also fell as Derbyshire slipped to 172-7. Brett Randell then helped Andersson add 84 for the eighth wicket. Andersson completed his hundred from 159 deliveries, with 11 fours, as the pair pushed the home side to a first batting point.

Randell made 29 before pulling Bertie Foreman to deep midwicket, while Jack Morley played on against Ahmed. Mahmud returned to dismiss Shoaib Bashir leg before and finished with 4-30; Ahmed took 3-73. Andersson remained at the crease after facing 190 balls, while 47 extras also contributed to Derbyshire's final total.

Kent's reply lasted long enough for Derbyshire to claim an important late breakthrough. Aitchison had Ben Compton caught at point, leaving Crawley unbeaten on three and Foreman on four at stumps. Kent took three bowling points and Derbyshire two batting points, with the visitors trailing by 289 runs after a day that shifted sharply away from their early control.
