McIlroy shoots 63 to take Abu Dhabi clubhouse lead after penalty
Rory McIlroy surged into contention at the Abu Dhabi Championship on Friday, shooting a nine-under-par 63 a day after a rules penalty had left him well behind the leader. BBC Sport reported that the Northern Irishman made 11 birdies at Yas Links to reach 11 under for the tournament and take the clubhouse lead, with several leading players still to finish their second rounds.

The turnaround followed a two-stroke penalty during Thursday's opening round. McIlroy was sanctioned for improving his lie after pressing grass behind his ball with his club before a chip at the par-four 12th. That ruling left him on two under at the end of the first day, eight strokes adrift of Italy's Francesco Laporta, rather than the four-under total he would otherwise have recorded.
Friday's round also began with a setback, as McIlroy bogeyed the first hole, but he recovered with birdies at the second, fourth and seventh. His strongest stretch came around the turn, when he birdied five successive holes from the ninth through the 13th. A bogey at 14 interrupted that run, before birdies at both closing holes helped him complete the 63. According to the BBC, it was his first round with 11 birdies in a DP World Tour event.
The performance also came during McIlroy's pursuit of another Race to Dubai title. The 37-year-old entered the tournament third in the season standings, behind Eugenio Chacarra and Patrick Reed. He is seeking a fifth consecutive title and an eighth overall, a total that would match Colin Montgomerie's record. His clubhouse position in Abu Dhabi remained provisional while other contenders were still playing.
Both players ahead of McIlroy in the season rankings returned second-round scores of 71. Chacarra stood at three under for the tournament, while Reed was one over. Chacarra had recently displaced Reed at the top of the standings by winning the DP World India Championship, his third victory of the season. Reed's earlier successes included the Rolex Series event in Dubai and a victory in Qatar.
