Medvedev Beats Gorzny in Straight Sets to Reach US Open Third Round

Daniil Medvedev advanced to the third round of the US Open with a 6-1, 6-3, 7-5 victory over American wild card Sebastian Gorzny on Wednesday. BBC Sport reported the straight-sets result, while the tournament's official website confirmed that the seventh seed reached this stage at Flushing Meadows for the eighth time.

The 2021 champion established control immediately at Louis Armstrong Stadium, breaking serve in the opening game. According to the US Open's match report, the first set lasted 21 minutes and Medvedev won 25 of the 35 points played. He captured eight of nine points behind his first serve in the set and all five points played on Gorzny's second serve.

Gorzny offered more resistance as the contest developed. The world No. 731 had entered the main draw by winning the USTA's American Collegiate Player Wildcard Playoff, then saved five match points during a five-set first-round victory over Raphael Collignon. That opening match lasted three hours and 58 minutes and gave the University of Texas player his first Grand Slam win.

The American became increasingly competitive in the third set and saved four break points while serving at 4-4. He held to move ahead 5-4, but Medvedev remained secure on his own serve and completed the match without being taken to a tiebreak. The Russian finished with 14 aces, faced only one break point and won 87 percent of his first-serve points, according to the official tournament report.

The match also featured an unusual interruption when two birds landed on the net during a second-set rally. Play continued briefly before the chair umpire ordered the point to be replayed. The decision came after Medvedev believed he had ended the rally with a forehand, but the disruption did not change the direction of the match.

The victory gave Medvedev consecutive hard-court wins for the first time since his run to the Indian Wells final in March, the US Open said. He has now opened his New York campaign with two straight-set victories after arriving from a loss to Martin Damm in Winston-Salem. His third-round opponent was still to be decided when the tournament published its match report, with Jaume Munar and 26th seed Arthur Rinderknech contesting that place.
