Spain secured a place in the Nations League quarter-finals on Tuesday after substitute Mikel Merino scored twice in a 2-1 comeback win over Croatia in Split. EFE reported that his goals in the 61st and 88th minutes overturned the hosts' lead, giving Luis de la Fuente's side another victory in their fourth group fixture.

Croatia had led from the 17th minute through Ivan Perisic at Stadion Poljud. According to BBC Sport, the home side received a standing ovation at half-time after a performance that contrasted with their 7-0 defeat by England in the preceding Nations League game. Spain went into the interval a goal down despite arriving in pursuit of an 11th consecutive win.

De la Fuente introduced Merino for Alex Baena at the break, a change that altered the match. El Pais reported that Dani Olmo collected a loose ball inside the area and supplied Merino for the equaliser. The midfielder placed his effort beyond Dominik Livakovic, bringing Spain level after Croatia had protected their advantage throughout the first half.

The hosts then lost their goalscorer in the 79th minute. BBC Sport reported that Perisic, who had shortly beforehand forced a save with a powerful attempt, received a second yellow card for a foul on Marc Cucurella. Spain had already threatened through Lamine Yamal, whose goalbound effort was blocked as the visitors sought a second goal.

Merino delivered the winner with two minutes of normal time remaining, collecting a pass from Arsenal team-mate Martin Zubimendi and finishing to complete his double. BBC Sport recorded the goals as his 14th and 15th for Spain. The decisive contribution came from the bench, with both Merino and Zubimendi having entered as substitutes during the match.

The Spanish football federation confirmed that the result completed four wins from four games and guaranteed progression to the knockout stage. Spain have 12 points, three more than England, who beat the Czech Republic 3-0 on Tuesday. Qualification is secured, but first place remains an objective for the final two group matches; Spain have not yet completed their league-phase schedule.
