Merson's Damning Verdict: Chelsea's Best Days Are Firmly Behind Them
Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has declared that Chelsea's greatest achievements are behind them, suggesting the club's massive spending hasn't translated into success. The Sky Sports pundit claims the Blues are at a crossroads and must reassess their entire approach to restore former glories.

Merson, speaking on Sky Sports' nightly show, offered a scathing assessment of Chelsea's current trajectory. "I've been watching this club for twenty years, and I've never seen them this far from where they want to be," he said. "All that money, all those players, and where are they? Fighting for eighth place. Their best days are over."
The Blues have spent over £1 billion in the past three transfer windows under the Clearlake consortium, yet results on the pitch have failed to match the ambitious projections. With key fixtures remaining and Champions League qualification looking increasingly unlikely, pressure is mounting on manager Mauricio Pochettino.
"You can buy all the talent in the world, but if the structure isn't right, you're just throwing money away," Merson continued. "Chelsea need to stop thinking like a new club and start building something sustainable. Roman Abramovic built a dynasty through stability. This new regime needs to learn from that."
Chelsea's squad includes several high-profile acquisitions including Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, and Christopher Nkunku. Yet the team has struggled for consistency, with the defense particularly vulnerable. They've conceded 42 goals this season, a statistic that highlights the disconnect between individual quality and collective performance.
Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel offered a different perspective: "The pressure at this club is unlike anywhere else. Players need time to adapt, but Chelsea fans want results immediately. It's a difficult balance to strike."
The Blues face a crucial summer where major decisions about the squad's direction will be made. Whether Merson's assessment proves accurate or overly harsh, Chelsea's hierarchy must address the fundamental issues that have prevented the club from competing at the highest level since Todd Boehly's takeover.
