Miller and Bavuma centuries seal South Africa's ODI series win over Australia

South Africa secured the one-day international series against Australia with a 32-run victory at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on Sunday. AFP reported that centuries from captain Temba Bavuma and David Miller helped the hosts reach 365 for nine before Australia were dismissed for 333.

Australia's decision to field initially brought a breakthrough, with Josh Hazlewood removing Aiden Markram from the first delivery. Bavuma and Miller subsequently added 156 for the fourth wicket. According to IOL's reporting, Bavuma reached his sixth ODI hundred from 112 balls in the 36th over, providing stability before the innings moved into its closing stages.

Miller finished with a career-best 142 from 93 deliveries, including 12 fours and nine sixes. Bavuma contributed 103 from 116 balls. Jack Edwards dismissed both century-makers and returned figures of five for 67, taking wickets through the later part of the innings as South Africa built their total.

The match also carried significance beyond the scoreboard. IOL reported that South Africa's players wore the names of breast cancer survivors for the Wanderers' annual Pink Day. Miller represented his mother, Jenny, a cancer survivor, by wearing her name on his shirt during his century.

Australia's chase began with a partnership of 130 between Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head, who each finished with 84. But that platform did not translate into a successful pursuit. AFP reported that the visitors again struggled to maintain momentum through the middle overs against South Africa's spin attack.

Bjorn Fortuin bowled Marsh, while Keshav Maharaj and Aiden Markram also completed their full ten-over allocations. Xavier Bartlett's 50 from 28 balls provided late resistance without changing the result. Marsh acknowledged Australia's difficulty converting their promising starts, while crediting the South African bowlers for their work during those middle phases.

The teams conclude the ODI series in Potchefstroom on September 30, according to the ICC's published schedule. A three-match Test series then begins in Durban on October 9. The ICC has identified the ODI fixtures as preparation for the 2027 World Cup, which South Africa will co-host with Zimbabwe and Namibia.
