Naeem Debut Fifty Puts Derbyshire in Control at Gloucestershire

Mohammed Bin Naeem marked his Derbyshire debut with 71 to give the visitors the advantage after day two of their County Championship Division Two match against Gloucestershire in Bristol. Derbyshire reached 162-2 at stumps, trailing the home side's first-innings total of 237 by 75 runs.

The 20-year-old opener faced 119 balls and built two important partnerships, adding 70 with Harry Came and 91 with Matthew Montgomery. According to the BBC report supplied by the ECB Reporters' Network, Bin Naeem became the first Derbyshire player to score a half-century on debut since Tony Borrington made 70 against Essex in 1971.

Came contributed 43 before Will Williams trapped him lbw, ending the opening stand. Bin Naeem reached 50 from 95 deliveries, with six fours and a six, before Sai Kishore had him caught behind in the penultimate over. Montgomery remained unbeaten on 40 as Derbyshire closed with eight first-innings wickets still available.

Gloucestershire had resumed on 62-5 after their top order struggled on the opening day. James Bracey led the recovery with 113, his 20th first-class hundred and fourth century of the season. He shared stands of 43 with Ed Middleton, 49 with Kishore and 79 with Williams to lift the hosts from 37-5 to a competitive total.

Bracey was dropped on 39 off Shoaib Bashir before completing his fifty from 90 balls. He later reached three figures by pulling Ben Aitchison to the leg side. His innings lasted 166 deliveries and included 12 fours before he edged Martin Andersson behind with the score on 207-8. Williams supported him with 42 from 106 balls.

Brett Randell finished with 5-41 from 17.2 overs for Derbyshire. The New Zealand bowler removed Kishore earlier in the recovery, then returned to dismiss Matt Taylor and Williams as Gloucestershire's innings ended at 237. Derbyshire collected three points from the first two days while Gloucestershire had yet to earn a point, leaving the visitors well placed to pursue a first-innings lead on day three.
