Newcastle Beat Tottenham 2-0 as Spurs Fall to Premier League Bottom

Newcastle United beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in north London as second-half goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa left Spurs at the bottom of the Premier League table. BBC Sport reported that the two goals arrived within a 10-minute spell, prompting thousands of home supporters to leave before the final whistle.

Tottenham created 17 attempts and put six on target but failed to score, while Newcastle converted both of their shots on target. The result followed Spurs’ 3-0 defeat at Brentford in their opening league match, meaning Roberto de Zerbi’s side has lost twice, conceded five goals and scored none. Tottenham has now won only three of its past 23 home league games.

The poor start comes after a summer in which BBC Sport said Tottenham spent more than £300 million on the squad. Midfielders Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali arrived for £85 million and £100 million respectively, while defender Jan Paul van Hecke cost £52 million and winger Savio joined for £75 million. Savio missed the Newcastle match because of what De Zerbi described as muscle fatigue. Loan signing Omar Marmoush made his Spurs debut.

De Zerbi said he was disappointed by the result but did not believe Tottenham deserved to lose. He argued that Spurs had played better until Newcastle opened the scoring and said there was no panic about the team’s direction. The Italian added that his players must improve defensively, work hard and build stronger connections as a group.

Tottenham finished 17th in each of the previous two Premier League seasons and avoided relegation on the final day of the 2025-26 campaign. De Zerbi was appointed near the end of March and collected 11 points from seven matches to keep the club in the division. He said changing the pattern of those two seasons could not be achieved quickly, particularly while transfer business remained active.

The transfer window is due to close on Tuesday, and De Zerbi had said before the match that Tottenham still wanted one more player in a specific position. Asked about Kevin Danso, Pape Matar Sarr and Richarlison, who have been linked with departures, he said players seeking to leave would need to bring an acceptable financial solution to the club. For now, Tottenham’s immediate task is to secure its first point and first league goal of the season.
