NFL Uses Melbourne Debut to Push Flag Football for Brisbane 2032

The NFL is using its first regular-season game in Australia to advance flag football's case for a place at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. The Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers are scheduled to play Friday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and The Guardian reported that the Olympic opportunity was part of the league's decision to bring the game to Victoria.

Flag football, a non-contact form of American football, will make its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028. The International Olympic Committee is finalizing the core sports for Brisbane 2032 this year, after which local organizers can propose additional sports. The Guardian reported that the process is expected to conclude before the end of 2026 or early in 2027.

Peter O'Reilly, the NFL's executive vice president for international events, told the SportNXT conference that flag football is central to the league's international effort and that the NFL hopes it will remain on the Olympic program in Brisbane. O'Reilly also confirmed that the prospect of Brisbane inclusion was a key factor in Melbourne prevailing through a competitive hosting process. NFL chief marketing officer Tim Ellis said the league was continuing to work toward that goal.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan also backed flag football's Olympic future while acknowledging that it differs significantly from the tackle version played in the NFL. Shanahan previously coached at a flag football exhibition supported by Tom Brady in March. He said his experience watching the game grow among younger players in schools and colleges informed his support for Olympic participation.

The league is pairing the Rams-49ers game with grassroots and promotional activity. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell pledged in April to provide a flag football kit to every school in Australia, with the first kits arriving in Queensland late last month. Melbourne's Kia Arena has also been converted into a flag football venue for a three-day NFL fan festival beginning Thursday, and players from Australia and New Zealand are due to participate in a showcase Friday afternoon.

The MCG game is expected to draw a crowd near the venue's 100,000 capacity, according to The Guardian. Australia finished 12th in both the men's and women's competitions at last month's flag football world championships in Germany. Only six men's teams and six women's teams will qualify for the sport's Olympic debut in Los Angeles, making the domestic development drive relevant to both the NFL's expansion plans and Australia's competitive ambitions.
