Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended under tennis anti-doping rules after a June sample tested positive for a cocaine metabolite. The Australian has not appealed the interim measure to date.

Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended under the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme after testing positive for a metabolite of cocaine. The International Tennis Integrity Agency announced the case on Wednesday, while BBC Sport reported that the Australian had acknowledged the positive test in a social-media statement.

The ITIA said Kyrgios provided a sample at the ATP 250 tournament in Mallorca, Spain, on June 22. A laboratory accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency confirmed on July 17 that the sample contained benzoylecgonine, which the agency identified as a metabolite of cocaine.

Cocaine is listed by WADA as both a stimulant and a substance of abuse, and it is prohibited in competition under tennis anti-doping rules. The ITIA said the nature of the substance makes a provisional suspension mandatory. That interim suspension has been in place since August 4.

The 31-year-old has the right to appeal the provisional suspension, but the ITIA said he had not done so at the time of its announcement. The agency also noted that reduced sanctions can apply to substances of abuse if they were taken outside competition. It did not announce a final sanction or a timetable for the case's resolution.

BBC Sport reported that Kyrgios wrote on Instagram that he had made a major mistake and accepted full responsibility. The report added that he has won one of four singles matches in 2026. The ITIA's notice identified Kyrgios as a former world number 13, the career-high ranking he reached in October 2016.

While the provisional suspension remains active, Kyrgios cannot play in, coach at or attend tournaments organised or sanctioned by the ATP, WTA, Grand Slams, World Tennis or national associations. The restriction is an interim anti-doping measure; the ITIA's announcement did not state that a final disciplinary outcome had been reached.
