Norris, who made her international debut last summer, has forced her way into contention after an outstanding domestic season with the Southern Vipers. The 23-year-old wicket-keeper batter scored 487 runs in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy at an average of 54.11, including two centuries that showcased her ability to anchor an innings under pressure.

Russo, meanwhile, has been in scintillating form with both bat and ball. The 26-year-old struck 312 runs at a strike rate of 156 during England's recent tour of New Zealand, while also claiming 11 wickets with her medium-fast bowling. Her versatility makes her a crucial asset in the shortest format of the game.

Captain Heather Knight expressed her excitement at the squad composition: "We've selected a group that balances experience with youth and energy. Norris has earned her place through sheer weight of runs, while Russo brings that X-factor that can turn matches on their head."

The squad also includes established names such as Nat Sciver-Brunt, who returns from injury, experienced seamer Katherine Scrivens, and young leg-spinner Sarah Glenn. The selection committee has opted for flexibility, naming three travelling reserves including uncapped 18-year-old Maia Bouchard, who could debut following Alice Perrin's withdrawal due to injury concerns.

England begin their World Cup campaign against South Africa on October 12, with the tournament taking place across venues in the United Arab Emirates. Mitchell emphasised that the team has been building towards this moment: "The players have worked incredibly hard. We go there as genuine contenders and believe we have the squad to go all the way."
