Nottinghamshire Beat Surrey to Take Three-Point Division One Lead

Nottinghamshire moved three points clear at the top of County Championship Division One after beating Surrey at the Oval, according to The Guardian's county cricket report. The defending champions turned a closely contested match in their favor through a decisive fifth-wicket partnership and a fast-bowling performance led by Olly Stone, leaving Surrey eighth in the table and only two points above a relegation place.

The match remained finely balanced after 23 wickets fell across the opening two days. When Nottinghamshire lost their fourth wicket in the second innings, their lead stood at 169. Joe Clarke and Kyle Verreynne then added 110 together, giving the visitors enough distance to set Surrey a target of 329.

Surrey's chase depended heavily on Ollie Pope, who made 111. The Guardian reported that captain Rory Burns' 16 was the next-highest score by a Surrey batter. Stone completed a 10-wicket haul in the match, while Dillon Pennington took five wickets as Nottinghamshire secured the points.

The result also underlined Surrey's sharp decline from the form that delivered three consecutive championship titles from 2022 through 2024. They have won only one match in the 2026 campaign. Nottinghamshire, champions last season, now hold the narrowest of advantages in a Division One race that remains crowded at the top.

Somerset stayed close by beating Essex after establishing a first-innings lead of 311. Josh Thomas scored a century, with Henry Nicholls, Tom Abell and James Rew also contributing. Jack Leach and Archie Vaughan took six wickets between them in Essex's first innings, before captain Lewis Gregory enforced the follow-on.

Essex resisted more effectively in their second innings, forcing Leach and Vaughan through 95 overs. The pair finished that innings with five and three wickets respectively. Somerset then chased 102 to collect 22 points and remain two behind Nottinghamshire. Warwickshire are also in the chase: their narrow win over Sussex left them five points off the lead before they host Nottinghamshire in the next round.
